Deep Sky Images
Bubble Nebula Calbwell C11 NGC 7365 The other night the skies opened up and the , UGGGH, marine layer, moved offshore so we fired up the mighty Planewave CDK17 and the SBIG STL11000m camera. The subframes are all 10 minutes guided and acquired with CCDSoft. They were reduced and processed in MAXIM and finished up in Photoshop. We have included a picture of the Clown Nebula (NGC 2392) which was taken 3 nights ago. The nebula has a visual brightness of 9.1 magnitude, while it is only 9.9 photographically. The central star, cataloged as HD 59088, is of visual magnitude 10.5 and spectral type O7f, and thus seen quite easily by visual observers. Its distance is not very well known, and estimated sometimes at some 3,000 light years. That is the distance light traveled for over 3000 years before we were able to capture those elusive photons with our 12 inch diameter telescope and CCD cameras. The image was obtained over 30 minutes of exposure from a driveway here in Ukiah by Paul. So, go find that old telescope which has been gathering dust in the closet and bring it out. The skies here in Ukiah are still mostly dark and clear. Ask you neighbors to keep their outside lights pointed down, seek out the owners and managers of the box stores, and as that they comply as well, and mostly, get together with your representatives in local government, as ask them to keep our skies dark for future generations. Cresccent Nebulap usThis was imaged during a full moon resulting in a loss of contrast. A section of the nebula is shown here as the image scale was quite large for the optics. These were set at f6.3 using the 12" with a focal reducer. 15 images of 300 seconds each, all dark frame reduced, all flat fielded and the co-added to the 3 sets of color frames. an email. Until then, dark skies to you all.
